The date the car was first registered anywhere in the world (matches Skatteetaten's "Registrert i utlandet"). Used to calculate bruksfradrag per Skatteetaten's 2024 satser β€” the age-based discount on engangsavgift, granular to the month. Applies to both EVs and combustion cars. Reaches 100% at 20+ years (zero engangsavgift). Leave empty for a brand-new car.
Most US-market cars built before 2024 use HFK-134a.
Skatteetaten's default for a personbil is ~1.0 kg. Check the AC service sticker under the hood for an exact figure.

How it works

Five steps from US driveway to Norwegian plate

Cars are different from parcels. Here's the practical sequence.

Source the car

You find the car (or we help β€” see "Shopping assistance" on the pricing page). We verify VIN, title, and that the seller can release it cleanly. We send wire instructions and an inspection checklist.

US pickup & port

We collect the vehicle from the seller, transport it to the Port of Miami (or East Coast equivalent), and prepare it for RoRo loading β€” fluids checked, fuel low, paperwork sealed in the cabin.

Atlantic crossing

RoRo (roll-on roll-off) vessel. ~3 weeks Miami β†’ Drammen, depending on schedule. Container shipping available for high-value or fragile classics at higher cost.

Norwegian customs & engangsavgift

We file the tolldeklarasjon, declare CO2/NOx/weight values, and pre-pay MVA + engangsavgift. The car clears customs while still at the port.

Registration & plates

We hand the car off to Statens Vegvesen for the registration inspection ("registreringskontroll"). Once it passes, you get Norwegian plates. Total time customs-to-plates is typically 1–3 weeks.

Why is importing an EV from the US suddenly interesting?

Three things make the math work β€” and the window is closing.

Norwegian EV MVA phase-out β€” the timing matters

The EV VAT exemption is being wound down in steps. The calculator above already uses the year that applies right now, but here's the full schedule for planning:

If you're considering an EV import, every year you wait costs ~50,000–100,000 NOK in additional MVA on a typical $40K-$60K vehicle.

What about classic cars (and used cars in general)?

Norway applies bruksfradrag β€” an age-based discount on engangsavgift β€” to all used vehicles, regardless of fuel type. Skatteetaten updated the official satser on 1 January 2024 to be much more generous, especially for older cars. The calculator above uses the full table from Skatteetaten's bruksfradragstabellen:

The big change in the 2024 satser: a vehicle 20 years or older pays no engangsavgift at all. This is the modern "veterankjΓΈretΓΈy" reality β€” a 2005 Mustang now imports tax-free on the engangsavgift line. A 1969 Camaro likewise. The classic-car path has gotten dramatically cheaper in the last two years.

Bruksfradrag applies to the engangsavgift only β€” MVA, vrakpantavgift, refrigerant tax, customs documentation, and Statens Vegvesen registration are still full price.
